Lifetime License Ban

Getting a DUI in Connecticut can have serious and long-lasting consequences. These consequences increase for each subsequent DUI to your first. In the event that you receive three or more DUIs, the status of your license is permanently at stake. On this page, I will discuss the potential consequences of a third or subsequent DUI, as well as what my office can do to help you.

Third DUI Consequences

If you receive a third or subsequent DUI in the state of Connecticut, you face the following penalties:

  • Up to three years in prison, with a mandatory minimum sentence of a year and probation.
  • 100 hours of community service.
  • A fine of $2,000-$8,000.
  • The revocation of your driver’s license (a lifetime driver’s license ban).

What the court may not explain to you is that if your license is revoked after a DUI conviction, you may be able to get your license back. Even though “revocation” implies that your driver’s license will be permanently taken away from you, there are situations in which you can get it back. DUI offenders are eligible for the reinstatement of their driver’s license 10 years after the date of their DUI conviction. In the event that the license is reinstated, the driver will have to use an ignition interlock device in any car that they drive. Still, this is better than the alternative of not being able to drive at all. The Commissioner can lift the ignition interlock device requirement after a certain period of time, if they see fit.

Getting Your License Back

While many DUI lawyers do not bother trying to help clients get their driver’s license back after a lifetime license ban, at Ruane Attorneys, we are more than happy to assist. We can represent you and show good cause for the reinstatement of your license. We can also work with the Commissioner down the line to have the ignition interlock device requirement lifted.

If your license has been banned, revoked, or even suspended due to a DUI, there are alternatives that you can consider. One is going through the reinstatement process with the help of a DUI lawyer or on your own. If your license has been suspended, you might consider a work or education permit. This might be right for your situation, and it might allow you to get to and from work or school and ease the burden of your license suspension. This can at least ensure that you can continue your education or that you will not be fired from your job, securing your income.
