As a condition of getting your driver’s license restored after having been suspend, the Department of Motor Vehicles might require you it install an Ignition Interlock Device. This is also known as an IID. If the DMV requires an IID in order for you to be able to drive, you must install this device on each vehicle that you operate. What is the IID?

The purpose of an IID is to ensure the driver of a vehicle cannot operate the vehicle when their breath as registered by the device is higher that the state limit. For those 21 and over in their personal vehicles (in Connecticut) that means a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .08% or higher.

Cars You Share or Don’t Own

If you are required to install an IID device and you do not own a car, this requirement can be a challenge, but certainly is not impossible. The questions that you need to ask:

• Whose vehicle do you normally drive?
• Would the owner of that vehicle consent to you having the device installed in their car?

If the owner of the vehicle is okay with this, then they just need to go with you to install the device or fill out a consent form for installation. This is true for any company-owned vehicles you may drive as well.

The rule is you do not necessarily need to own the car, just that any car you drive has the device installed. Therefore, as long as the owner has no issues with it, you may use their car.

One item to note however is anyone and everyone whom drives vehicle that have the device must use the device when operating that vehicle as there is no way to turn on and off the device once it is installed. So if you share a car with another family member, they need to be made aware of the IID as well as how to use it.

You should not operate a motor vehicle without an IID installed if the DMV gives you an IID requirement. If pulled over by the police and you are supposed to have an IID installed in your vehicle, and the vehicle you are driving does not have the device, your license could be suspended. Avoid this issue by refraining from driving a vehicle that does not have an IID installed.
