Personal Statement
The Board of Pardons, when looking at applications, looks for those applicants who show that they have changed since getting convictions, and that they have a strong desire to get a pardon. Writing a personal statement for your pardon application is a great way to show the Board why you deserve a pardon, but it can also be difficult to know where to start or what to include. Here are some tips to help you write a strong personal statement.
Educational Achievements, Awards, and Diplomas
Any educational diplomas or achievements that you have received since your conviction are so key in showing self-improvement and desire to be successful and move on from mistakes in the past. Showing that you have worked hard at advancing your education goes to show that you are a productive member of society and have the desire to contribute your talent to the world.
Employment
Jobs that you have worked at can be a huge asset to a personal statement. Talking about jobs that you have had shows that you are a contributing member of society and that you are making money to support yourself with growth and maturity. Particularly if you have been at a job for a while, you should mention your job history in your personal statement.
Marriage and Children
Having people around you like a spouse and children, who love and support you, is very important and a good way to show the Board that you have strong relationships and people who will help you stay on the right track. Talking about your strong relationships in your personal statement can be beneficial when it comes to getting a pardon.
Community Involvement
Community involvement shows that you care about your state, city, neighborhood, and those around you. Showing that being around others in your community and doing something you love will establish your wish to connect with others. It will also help show that you are moving on from a life in which you committed a crime or crimes. It also shows that you want to make a positive impact on your community and those around you.
Volunteering, Charity
Volunteering speaks toward your character and that you want to help others and help your community accomplish things. If you have volunteered or been involved in a charity organization, this can make a big impact on your personal statement.
Military Achievements
If you have joined the service, this would be a great topic to talk about in your personal statement. Serving in the armed forces show dedication, motivation, and discipline.
Awards and Recognitions
Any awards or recognitions that you have received since your criminal convictions should be mentioned in your personal statement. Being awarded or recognized for something you did shows that you care about accomplishing goals and working hard for good outcomes.
Recent Positive Changes
Anything else that you have done in your life since your criminal convictions like buying a house, working toward a new career, starting a family, and anything else that you are proud of should be included in your personal statement.
