Summer Law Students
Summer Associate Program
This summer program aims to provide a select group of law students the opportunity to apply and develop research and writing skills. Students can do this by drafting informative articles and preliminary briefing. Also, they do this regarding criminal defense, post-conviction habeas corpus, and other legal practice areas. Fellowship participants will work with attorneys and supervisory staff in writing and editing informative legal articles. These articles will see use in legal briefs, informative firm publications, and web publication. In prior years, students have assisted with projects. Also, they have been able to become published editors of books available on Amazon.com. Multiple summer associates have been hired as associates after graduation from law school.
This unique opportunity provides emerging lawyers first-hand experience in handling trial and appellate level legal research, legal marketing, and business development skills as well as the opportunity to hone in skills to convey complex legal theories in palatable ways to the average non-lawyer.
The firm currently has positions for students ending their 1L or 2L years.
1L Students
For 1L students, the primary responsibilities will be to assist attorneys with file review, preliminary research, client consultations, and general office duties including processing new client intakes, filing and reviewing case files prior to court appearances. Also, usually, the summer associates appear in court with an attorney one to two mornings per week to assist in the representation by our office.
2L Students
For 2L students, the primary responsibility will be to assist with post conviction legal research and writing, compiling case notes and appearing when appropriate at court for motions and trials with a supervisory attorney. Also, the opportunity may exist to argue motions in court. 2L students must be comfortable visiting incarcerated clients in prisons throughout the state.
For both levels, legal research and writing will be an important part of the position, and a command of online legal research and a quick turnaround of briefing is required. The issues we tackle daily are REAL WORLD issues facing our clientele. You are expected to handle your caseload in a professional manner and with the dutiful attention to detail that is required in our profession.
